FATIGUE

When work is satisfying, a person tires less than they would doing something they hate. They tire less, but they still tire. AI doesn’t have such problems, though you can stumble across online stories about how AI “lost its nerves” and insulted a human. But in reality, AI doesn’t get tired. For some, this is an argument in favor of artificial intelligence. In a world where productivity and efficiency determine quality—even in the case of humans, or perhaps especially in the case of humans. Human quality is measured somehow. Specifically, by the coefficient of productivity. And in this comparison, AI wins hands down. But I wouldn’t be myself if I didn’t try to look at it from the opposite perspective. Out of pure contrariness. So inefficiently, unproductively, just for fun.

Human fatigue sparks a desire for change. And so, a person finds themselves in need. When I need something, I look for someone who can meet that need. If I find such a person, I tell them they’re needed, making them, in that moment, the happiest person in the world. Why? Because I help them answer the fundamental question: what is the meaning of life? As Rabbi Manis Friedman writes in his excellent book Creating Life That Matters—we find the meaning of life the moment we ask ourselves: What am I needed for? What do others need me for? And when we start doing what we’re needed for. It’s a topic I’d love to explore more deeply someday. But not today. Today, I’m tired.

By now, we can all probably see that the process of fulfilling needs, which begins with human imperfection, is what drives every economy. I’d like a bigger house, a better car, an easier job, more time, etc. Can someone help me?

AI doesn’t ask for help. Not in that sense. It doesn’t say: I’m in need—save me—help me.

AI doesn’t tire, and that’s its weakness. The closer a being is to perfection, the more static it becomes. Unchanging. Ready. Finished. And in its finished state (understood as “I already have everything”), lies the prophecy of AI’s downfall. Finished. Okay, then—THE END.
